Letter From Kashi Regarding GMO Allegations

Below is the (very scripted) letter from Kashi to my contact in the grocery department at a local Whole Foods Market here in Michigan. He knew nothing about the allegations that Kashi's products (that are NOT organic) contain mostly GMO soy by a recent report from the Cornocopia Institute (a food watchdog organization). (read the full report here.)

He said he would look into it and get back to me. He responded same day (thank you!) with a email from Kashi. It doesn't seem to me that it answered any of MY questions and I'm not sure if it answered my contacts questions either.

It's all well and good that they do sell organic products, but that's not what were talking about here: the subject at hand is the NON-GMO food items by Kashi, that are considered by many to be "natural" & "wholesome". When in reality, they are not. GMO foods surely contribute to poor health.

Why you should care if you're eating GMO foods

GMO's have been show here to cause statistical significant changes in the both liver and kidney health of lab rats in only 90 days. They have been show here to cause low birth weights in rats.

It's no wonder that they damage health when the very nature of genetically modified foods go against the biological nature of our bodies. Genetically modified foods are created by joining one component of species with another species that would never occur in nature. Putting the genes of fish into tomatoes for example, so they are more hearty to the cold. Or putting bacteria into corn that is resistant to pesticides such as that found in BT corn. (No wonder our guts are so messed up!) One of the worst abominations is putting creating corn that produces it's own pesticide from within- doesn't sound like something I want to eat considering all the money I'm spending on probiotics!

See for yourself why they are destroying our health, the soil and the environment at large by watching the movie Seeds of Deception or you can read the book by the same title which is by Jeffrey Smith.

Hello Bob, (Name changed)

Thank you for contacting us about our foods and the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). At Kashi, our mission is to help people embrace natural health. We’ve been committed to this for over 25 years by making both natural and organic foods that are minimally processed, free of artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners and preservatives. We believe this the most impactful way to address the largest known health risks affecting Americans, which are associated with dietary factors not related to GMOs.

The foundation of our foods is our unique combination of Seven Whole Grains which are not commonly grown using GMOs. However, many factors outside our control, such as pollen drift from nearby crops and current practices in agricultural storage, handling, and shipping, have lead to an environment in North America where GMOs are not sufficiently controlled. As a result, some of our foods may contain GMOs.
However, Kashi purchases approximately 35 million pounds of organic ingredients annually, which we have increased significantly over the past five years with 48 percent of our total annual grain supply now being organic. We offer a range of USDA Certified Organic cereals called Kashi Organic Promise™, which collectively support more non-GMO, organic cereal purchases compared to the leading organic-only cereal maker.

We are excited to share with you that seven of our foods are now Non-GMO Project Verified. The items include Kashi®Cinnamon Harvest®Autumn Wheat®Island Vanilla®Strawberry Fields®, 7 Whole Grain Flakes, 7 Whole Grain Puffs and 7 Whole Grain Pilaf. This is the first step in our phased approach and we’re committed to this journey! You can follow our progress at NON GMO PROJECT.com or get more details atKashi.com

And as always, we continue to stay current on research related to helping improve natural health and revise our thinking and approach to making food continually as we learn.

We wish you the best with your health and wellness goals and appreciate the time you have taken to contact us.
