Blood Type Breakfast

Blood Type O breakfast on the left- Blood Type A on the right!

While ideally a Blood Type O gets plenty of animal source protein (mainly grass fed beef), a protein rich shake in the AM made with a good quality brand like Shakeology will get your O's through till lunch when they can exercise their carnivorous nature.

Blood type A's on the other hand (generally speaking) do much better on a vegetarian based diet. Thus, the straight up Carrot/Apple fresh juice on the right.

I'm a blood type A & I've always felt my best with a vegetarian based diet. I love to eat that way!

Carl on the other hand gets a little out if sorts without red meat. Before I new better I tried to have him go a week without meat to "cleanse"- NOT a good idea.

O's that are vegetarian & healthy are fortunate! However if the health of a vegetarian Blood Type O begins to deteriorate, consider eating grass fed beef a few times a week to get healthy again.

Check out the works of Dr. D'Adamo. Here is his website and he has written multiple books. I posted his link below.

The documentation of his success with this diet is pretty vast. As far as my work with clients I use this as a guide. I don't believe that it's 100% true all of the time. - nothing ever is in health!!

For example I have no problem woofing down a steak and veggies and I really enjoy it and have no problem digesting it. However if I ate that way all the time, I wouldn't feel good. I know this for myself and did long before learned about Blood Type Diets.

I have clients that are O's and unhealthy and I encourage them to start with bone broths and work up to grass fed beef with veggies a few times a week as a part of the entire regiment I put together.

Sometimes it takes time to figure out the exact right way to eat for every person because I don't think everyone fits into little boxes like that. I use it as a guide and find his work fascinating!

Thanks for reading!

On Turkey Day- Keep It Simple: Especially If Your Under the Weather

Ok, so now over-eating on Turkey Day contributes to illness? WHAT NEXT?

You can't drink the water, breath the air or eat food without there being some danger in it these days. Yes, true- it can be a bit bleak out there. However what I'm referring to specifically is food combining, how the body digests food and how it relates to this time of year when everyone and their grandmother is fighting off some "bug".

So what the heck am I talking about? Food Combining. Food combining is the concept of eating certain foods together and avoiding other food combinations so that they digest easily, without or with less gas and with best assimilation of nutrients contained therein.

When you eat too many different foods in one sitting, i.e. Thanksgiving or Christmas, your birthday or other festive event, your body gets REALLY tired after the meal. Ever notice this phenomenon? This is because your body is trying like HECK to digest 10 different foods all at once. Each requiring a different set of gastric juices, enzymes etc.

Gluten Free Start Up Suggestions- AND GF Dining Tips For Lansing Michigan

Trying to eat Gluten Free?

Here's some good starter info- BUT FIRST, WHY EAT GLUTEN FREE?

  • Gluten is a very sticky molecule, it sticks to cell receptor sites- essentially "gumming up the works"
  • Gluten has been modified over the last 150- years to be even MORE glutinous- we are now more reactive to this wheat as it's different than all previous wheat historically
  • Gluten inhibits cells ability to uptake sugar- adding insult to injury with those with sugar imbalances
  • Gluten makes you fat! - It's true, if you don't digest it well (most people don't), it doesn't completely leave the intestinal tract, adding weight over time
  • Gluten contributes to malabsorbtion of nutrients. This means your getting LESS of all those good foods your spending good money on.
  • Contributes to skin problems, yeast problems, breathing problems and digestive issues- probably alot more than that to...
  • Gluten can easily be avoided these days with a bit of work at first but you get used to it!

A Green Smoothie that is ACTUALLY Good!

Ok, I know GOOD is a subjective word. What's good to me, might not be good to you.

This spirulina smoothie will redefine your opinion of green drinks forever. It's so smooth, creamy and sweet- it's the best one I've had yet- Thanks to Rachel Knapp- my friend, fellow student the Naturopathic Institute and smoothie chef extraordinaire! All the credit is to you my dear!

Here's what you need and where to get it!

Mix all ingredients in the blender and blend until smooth! Add a few ice cubes and blend again if desired. Rachel says she likes to drink it out of a wine glass at home to be extra fun :-)

You'll spend about $35 or so on all this stuff (give or take some if you buy more nuts, chia, or spirulina) but have smoothies for at least 2 weeks. The cacao and the spirulina will likely last much longer as they are available in larger containers.

The Complete List of Genetically Modified Foods

Rapeseed - This is where canola comes from . All Canola is by definition GMO. I'd skip it and go for olive oil or coconut oil. They modified it to get rid of the Gluconsinolates, which were found in rapeseed meal leftover from pressing. This was toxic and had prevented the use of this meal in animal feed. In Canada the crop was renamed "canola" (Canadian oil) to differentiate it from non-edible rapeseed.

Honey - Honey can be produced from GM crops. Some Canadian honey comes from bees collecting nectar from GM canola plants. This has shut down exports of Canadian honey to Europe. Honey should ALWAYS be local! It's better for your health- espeically if you have allergies! Try to source your honey from an area that is not covered with GMO farms. Hard to do- I KNOW- but try:)

Cotton - Resistant to certain pesticides - considered a food because the oil can be consumed. The introduction of genetically engineered cotton plants has had an unexpectedly effect on Chinese agriculture. The so-called Bt cotton plants that produce a chemical that kills the cotton bollworm have not only reduced the incidence of the pest in cotton fields, but also in neighboring fields of corn, soybeans, and other crops. Bt cotton has also been responsible for killing animals in india that have grazed off the cotton fields after harvest. Some farmers there have lost their entire lively-hoods and have subsequently killed themselves to escape the social shame attached to the loss of their farms and being indebted so terribly to the banks.

The Risks We Take Everyday With GMO Foods

There are many health risks associated with Genetically Engineered foods.

The possible side-effects of GMO ingestion below have been documented by independent scientists- NOT affiliated with the biotech industry. We must adhere to the precautionary principle when it comes to something as important as our food.

With over 70% of processed foods on our shelves in the US being of genetically modified origin- the implications to our nations health are scary- to put it nicely.

So-Called "Natural" Food Companies Against Truth In Labeling Of Food- What You Need To Know.

Please consider boycotting the below named companies.

They are donating money to defeat Proposition 37 in California, a ballot initiative which SUPPORTS the Truth in Labeling of Our Food.

If this ballot passes, food manufacturers will begin changing their ways to help make our foods safer, less confusing, and more transparent.  Proposition 37 is designed to improve labeling practices and discourage misleading marketing tactics.

Want more info? Read this to find out why you should support Proposition 37.

Please donate just $5 today. If you can give more please do. This is an historic initiative! If our food requires labeling- this means that you will KNOW that a food your buying is genetically modified or not.  We deserve the choice- so that we can make educated decisions on what we eat and feed our families.
If you own a business, whether it's in the natural health field or NOT, Please consider endorsing Proposition 37. Add your name to the list- It Feels Good!

Organic Abundance Raw Organic Salsa

Raw Salsa on A Wheat Cracker- Pure Heaven! What is better than raw salsa at the end of summer???

...NOTHING! I made a little salsa for my Urban Herb Walk the other night and I just had to write it down. I've been munching on it for 3 days now and it's still really good- if I do say so myself:)

Hopefully most of the ingredients are in the garden for you already- which makes this a cheap and healthy snack! Here's what you'll need...

Organic Abundance Raw Salsa

  • 2lbs of Chopped up Organic Roma's, Heirlooms- or whatever you like!
  • 1/2 Organic Cucumber Grated (like cheese!) Squeeze out the juices as the tomatoes provide plenty:)
  • 1/4 Finely Chopped Organic White Onion (or yellow- I don't really think it matters) You could also use leeks, chives, or red onions.
  • 1/4 bunch of Organic Chopped Cilantro (less if your not crazy about it- I do insist on a pinch for authenticity!)

What's For Lunch? Organic Kale Salad- Spectacular!

What's for lunch? Crisp Organic Kale Salad!

Here's what you'll need!
  • Finely Chopped Young Kale
  • Tomato
  • Thinly Sliced Cucumber
  • Drizzle of Hemp & Herb Dressing
  • Light Sprinkle of Parmesan
  • Sprinkle of Ground Flax & Pumpkin Seeds for Crunch!
  • Add Feta Cheese to beef it up a bit if you like! ;)

Benefits of these foods include Calcium from the Kale & antioxidants from the tomatoes- especially home grown!

Selecting Young Kale will ensure a better flavor. Young Kale are the smaller leaves, they are more delicate & less bitter.

There are digestive benefits from the Apple Cider Vinegar, Hemp oil & herbs in the dressing. Ground flax provides additional fiber & Pumpkin Seeds are naturally anti-parasitic (gets rid of parasites). It's delicious without the cheese but with it- downright spectacular! Happy Summer!

Enjoy!
